One of the oldest varieties in Greece is Amassi. It is a rare Greek white table grape variety, cultivated in the regions of Central Macedonia and especially in the area of the prefecture of Pella. It is also known by the names of Local Grape Karatzova, Karatzoviko, Karatzoviko, Himmoniatiko, Fustani, Paschalino, Amaseia. The name “Amassya” comes from the Amassya of Asia Minor. It is a variety that the locals found as a native variety, cultivated it and named it ‘Amassya’ because it resembled the Amassya of Asia Minor. However, Amasshi is a different variety from Amassyacultivated in Asia Minor (Popa, 1980).
Our family has been involved in the cultivation and promotion of the Amassya variety since 1936. In 2014, with the establishment of the 3generation winery, the aim is to bring the Amassya variety into bottled white wine for the first time in history. Thomaidis Savvas, a graduate of viticulture – oenology in Italy, brings the know-how and starts the journey of winemaking in bottled wine.
